What type of boat?

Just Dreamin is a Beneteau First 42s7 which is about 42 feet long monohull sailboat. She was built in 1999 by French company Beneteau. She has the standard rig and the lead fin keel. There are a few different versions of this boat shoal draft wing keel lead (WK), wing keel iron (IK), deep keel lead (no designation), standard mast (SM) and race mast (no designation). Just Dreamin is a deep lead keel with a standard mast. The boat specs are below:

What offshore upgrades are being done?

I have been doing many upgrades beyond the base model for my Beneteau First 42s7. This boat is the standard two bedroom configuration with the deep racing keel and standard rig. The following is a list of some the upgrades more specific to offshore cruising.

  • GPS enabled EPIRB
  • InReach Global text messenger and tracker
  • Life Raft, Spinlock lifejackets with built in harness, double action twin lanyards, harnesses, flares, life sling, standard safety equipment, etc
  • Jack lines and attachment points for helmsman, cockpit and all of the deck
  • Level C rig inspection with Delta Rigging, mast out and Die penetrant test all terminations
  • Sea anchoring: New Jordan Series Drogue, special attachment points in transom for drogue
  • Anchoring: New Rocna 25kg primary anchor, new backup anchor, re-galvanise the chain
  • Rig modifications - removable inner fore stay to take new storm jib and blade head sail
  • New Storm jib
  • New blade head sail (90%) - for going to windward
  • New offshore genoa (140%) - sail maker inspected old genoa and advised replacement
  • Repaired main sail, added loose footing and add a very deep 3rd reef - sail maker inspected main sail and advised minor repairs.
  • New Water maker: Spectra 150 manual
  • 550W of Solar panels
  • Replaced house and engine batteries 2016
  • All new through hull fittings in Autumn of 2014
  • Backup handheld GPS with charts
  • Backup handheld VHF radio
  • Backup solar charger for backup devices.
  • New Dinghy Davits
  • RIB inflatable tender - with 8hp engine
  • Small crane arm for lifting the 8hp engine off the tender and putting it away in locker
  • 2 person kayak
  • New dodger (in progress)
  • Lee clothes for bunks (in progress)
  • Extra storage space in cabin
  • New Raymarine chart plotter, new Navionics maps, additional charts and so on
  • Sextant and associated books
